The Day Care Experiment

Experiments for Kids   Have fun/meet new friends

When I was young I dreamed of what it would be like to have a husband and a family.
My plans were to be a big career gal, doing it all.  The great job, family,  perfect house.
I would be a modern day women!
Well thats close to what happened.  I did get the great husband,  then the family came.  What a big slap in the face that was. I had a great job but had a number of babysitting problems. After agonizing over what I should do.  I quit my job and became the "home daycare Mom".  It was supposed to be temporary.  I have had a few breaks.  A year off here and there to have another baby. I now have three.
I have learned a thing or two since I started.   I know how hard it is to remain calm while the toilet is over flowing, the VCR is eating our favorite Barney tape and the baby has gotten into the cereal and dumped the whole box on the floor.
I have also learned that it is easier to keep them all together at the table doing easy experiments. I have compiled a list of the cheapest and the most fun. Enjoy!

The Magic Egg Trick
Will an egg float? Will it float in salt water? If fresh water is lighter than salt water, will fresh water float on salt water? This experiment will answer all these questions!

An egg
A glass
Water
Salt
A teaspoon

Carefully place the egg in a glass half full of water. It will sink.
Stir salt into the water, one teaspoonful at a time. The egg will gradually float up as you add more salt.
When the egg is floating at the surface, carefully add more water to nearly fill the glass. Dribble it slowly over a spoon held against the side of the glass, so that the fresh water doesn't mix with the salt water. You will end up with the egg floating on the boundary in between the fresh and salt water layers.

The weight of fresh water displaced by the egg weighs less than the egg, so the egg will not float on fresh water. The weight of the salt water displaced by the egg, however, is the same as the weight of the egg, and the egg flats on the salt water. Fresh water will float on salt water as long as the two don't get mixed together.
I borrowed this and other ideas from websites throughout the www.
